Sheffield International Artist’s Book Prize & Exhibition:
7th – 31st October 2015, Bank Street Arts

The Sheffield International Artist’s Book Prize is now in its fifth edition and since the first exhibition and Prize in 2008 it has grown to be one of the largest artist’s book prize in the world and a significant UK event in the artist’s book calendar. Opening up the Book has been built upon the success of the Prize and this year the exhibition includes exhibitors from more countries than ever before. For the first stage of the submission process, we received entries from forty five countries, with most being represented in the exhibition. For the first time this year we have selected from initial entries and the exhibition itself presents just over 200 books from an entry of nearly 400.

Whereas a book is three dimensional. It has volume (space), it is a volume (object), and some books emit volume (sound).——Keith A. Smith

Flip books are an obvious use of speed.——Keith A. Smith

We had too much information. We needed an editor… to take what mattered and throw out what didn’t matter.——Malcolm Galdwell

Artist Statement

Inspired by the story of a Japanese singer-songwriter, Nakamura Ataru, this work illustrates the beauty of gender through the materiality of books.

Nakamura Ataru, born a male as always felt the discomfort of being “trapped in the wrong body”. He went through lots of struggles and fears with issues of gender identity before transitioning. His most recognised song is “Tomodachi no Uta” (Poetry of a Friend), telling his unrequited love story with a band member. This song is so touching. It is applied and being re-interpreted in this book.

A mixture of visual, acoustic, and tactile languages is applied to blur the lines between femininity and masculinity.

Artist Book

The Art Libraries Society of the United Kingdom and Ireland produced a definition for ‘Artist’s Book’.
‘a book or book-like object in which an artist has had a major input beyond illustration or authorship: where the final appearance of the book owes much to an artist’s interference/ participation: where the book is the manifestation of the artist’s creativity: where the book is a work of art in itself.’

A Book is…

A piece of paper reflects not only time but also space. Books are formed by binding papers together to become containers of words that serve as a reservoir as well as a spring of wisdom.
